Yandex – when business diverges from practice. 10,000 entries and no UX/UI designer jobs. Memetics

The case is unprecedented, the Yandex company is the only techno. a giant that doesn’t use UX/UI construction in job titles.

The analysis was carried out according to data 10,000 records WayBack Machine pages well as the current list of vacancies as of January 31, 2024 (snapshot pages). For quick access, all requests and separately selected positions of designers are summarized in table.

A large share of records refers to the period 2021-2024. However, entries earlier (2015) also do not include UX/UI design.

Of the total volume of records, only 443 refer to the “Designer” topic. 287 of them are written in Cyrillic.

I ranked designers related to the design of services/interfaces, and not serving other tasks: marketing, content tasks of industrial design, both through the naming of vacancies and their description in controversial situations. 264 positions were clearly identified, 91 of which have English names (including the oldest records)

The Yandex company uses the following nomenclature for RU names:

  • web designer / 4 entries

  • interface designer / 9

  • designer in… Name of the product / 9

  • trainee designer… / 8

  • trainee designer in… / 3

  • senior designer experience… / 9

  • product designer in… / 50

  • leading product designer / 6

  • leading product designer / 3

  • intern product designer / 6

  • product designer / 32

  • senior product designer / 39

I wonder why the company stubbornly ignores the UI/IX construction in the knowledge of vacancies, because they are published not only on their site, but also on By the way, how are things there?

Head Hunter gives the following figures for searches:

  • UX/UI – 1,130 vacancies

  • Ux/ui designer — 333

  • Ux/ui design – 600

  • Ux-ui designer — 598

  • Ux ui designer – 264

  • web designer – 282

  • interface designer – 263

  • product designer – 3209

  • food designer 1 110

  • product designer – 877

Issuing upon request “product designer” and “product designer”, so to speak, is not entirely relevant, because along with designers, other product specialists are also present on the list: managers, analysts, etc.

So why doesn’t the company use the popular, replicated and “conversion” UI/UX design in job naming? It’s all about culture.

Corp. culture

The fact is that almost all of the company’s employees have a high-quality academic background (perhaps obtained already in the company itself). Professional teams respect the scientific interpretation of both UI and UX definitions and cannot afford to be ignorant of the matter. All, except Yandex.Praktika.

Interpretation of the “UI/UX” design from Yandex.Praktika.

Interpretation of the design “UI/UX” from Yandex.Practice.

The point is that there are two paradigms in the definition of these concepts: amateur/domestic (translated by .Practice) and academic.

For example, the ISO standard gives 4 definitions of UI as a self-sufficient design, which includes interface visualization, i.e. GUI/VUI etc. and user experience of interaction with it. Most designers confuse UI with GUI, and UX with user interface experience.

In his interview, Don Norman also focuses on the fact that “many specialists understand the term UX incorrectly” in “an application or website cannot be UX” because UX is not a stage of development, but an “Approach” to “Everything”, those to market analysis, marketing, distribution, pricing, human lifestyle, and finally to product quality characteristics.

Agree, an unpopular point of view from the author of the UX approach and term. Holivar opened the topic a couple of days ago in this publicationswith precise definitions, interpretations and quotations.

However, Yandex specialists work on projects, understanding the differences in terms and how the approach differs from the stage, with all due respect to the match, they do not allow themselves incorrect wording in the job titles.

Well, how does the Yandex Taxi team, which collects all possible data with each of your requests, verifies your level earningsand selecting the level of the taxi driver and the degree of your willingness to pay exactly such a price here and now, so that the margin of the trip is from 26 to 30%, and not to walk 5 minutes to the subway, can interpret the UI – as “so what does it look like”?

Naturally, Yandex does not “select” designers based on the principle of “does he know Norman’s dogmas” and how well he interprets them. There are only a couple of such specialists on our market, except for those from Yandex, especially for the position of juniors, because all (with rare exceptions) learn to be UX/UI designers.

In addition to the designers themselves, there is also recruitment, far from “these subtleties of yours” and “higher matters”, there is no desire to simplify life and collect more reviews for a more converting request, no, but it may appear.

Corporate culture and its components act as a filter and censor in such cases. According to Theories of memes or Memetics, such an aspect can be the “level of education”, which is not only in itself, but also with the help of dedicated mentors, lecture halls, equipment and relevant KPIs – is spread and supported in the company among all members.

A meme is like a gene, a minimal unit of information. But unlike a gene and a biological species, a meme describes a cultural aspect. The theory of memes was put forward by Comrade Dawkins in 1976. Active since then is developing.

From the analysis of names, patents and examples of designing custom patterns (for example, the development of unsubscribe patterns from Yandex+), it becomes obvious that the guys have an excellent knowledge of both the scientific base and apply it correctly. And since Vakansia is not only the “customer” of the new head, but also a recruiter from the semantics of names, it becomes obvious that the company is working to ensure that the “general level of education” is maintained. Yes, we have detailed statistics for only 3 years, but during this time, no matter how many customers and recruiters have changed, the naming of positions remains correct.

Thus, it is possible to define the “general level of academic literacy” as a significant component of the company’s culture, those Mem.

Meme theory does not allow the meme to work effectively as an isolated unit. Which means that the Meme must be part of a complex of interdependent memes, the so-called memeplex. This is what prevents the meme from dissolving. In addition to the code itself, the company must also have replicators, as in biology, a complex of enzyme proteins is responsible for DNA replication.

Obviously, the “literacy level” meme should be part of the “internal education” memeplex, which supports not only correct interpretations, but also the exchange of knowledge from related disciplines, from the industry in general, and the “product passport” meme, which in turn associated with correct documentation of key version history and “handover” of product expertise to new team members. I wrote about the latter in the analysis of the evolution of iPhone product titles.

Memes, like genes, do not always replicate correctly. Sometimes cancer cells appear in the body, but the tumor can be benign. On the portal, the guys still haven’t decided whether they have a category of UX designers or UX/UI.

. Practice

And with practice, everything is already clear – it’s one thing when a crowd of specialists is lined up for you, for a good salary, a team of professionals and a line in your resume. It’s another when you have to sell to someone who has a very mediocre understanding of the business. Well, the truth is, shouldn’t he have correct interpretations? It’s easier to sell the term UX/UI and popsovenko interpretation. After all, it’s simple, understandable.

I wish that everyone

I wish that all technology companies take an example from Yandex. No, not in the plan of patenting methods of determining wages and situational selection of the quality of a taxi driver due to a person’s “willingness” to pay a personalized offer. And in the field of naming your vacancies.
