Who is a junior in FAANG? / Hebrew

We all understand what the word Junior means in the context of software development. An inexperienced person who has recently entered the profession often makes mistakes and requires help and guidance. But how is it that in FAANG Junior positions (e.g., L3 at Google) are paid like Senior positions in other industries? For what? For mistakes, help, guidance and lack of experience? Some nonsense!

Each company defines the word Junior in its own way, and rightly so. In this article, I will explain how the FAANG companies, and much of the Big Tech industry along with them, define this position. IN Last time I talked about the general requirements for candidates. After understanding the requirements for this position, you will know who should come for an interview at FAANG, as well as how to prepare for it. With the right approach, being accepted to work is much easier than it seems.

Junior in FAANG

So a Junior in FAANG is valued by the company (in monetary terms) in the same way as a Senior in another industry. As? For what?! Many people stop at this point and conclude that FAANG simply has a stupid management that has lost touch with reality because of big money. There is even an opinion that you have to pay a lot because it is very bad to work in FAANG and there is a high turnover of personnel. I would like to suggest not to stop, and to think, maybe this is a meaningful decision and there are reasons for it? Let’s understand each other.

I would like to start by defining the Junior position. The fact is that the above – there is no definition. Look for yourself, there are only negative features (“needs help”) or denial of positive features (“no experience”). It doesn’t say who Junior is. In fact, it says who he is non-Junior – A person with experience who needs a minimum of help, etc, etc. So who is Junior?

Junior in FAANG is described in one word – growth. Junior must show steady and rapid growth in all work-related matters.

Every month, Junior SWE learns new technologies, approaches, tasks, knowledge domains. In the industry, knowledge of 10 frameworks is considered a sign of a Senior developer. Junior at FAANG explores new frameworks every day for breakfast. It is quite reasonable that he does this for the same level of pay.

Does the person show rapid professional growth? It is this quality that is primarily assessed on the performance review for L3 SWE. Your bonus at this position depends on your growth rate.

Junior, on the other hand, is the only position with an expiration date: lack of rapid growth leads to poor review ratings and eventual dismissal. In all positions, except Junior, you can sit as much as you want, and no one is surprised by this. But not on Junior.

It should now be clear why Junior staff at FAANG are so highly valued and paid. These companies are vitally dependent on continuous innovation. The ability to quickly absorb and instantly apply new knowledge is literally necessary for their survival on the market. Therefore, the business is not even able to perform new tasks right now, although this is also important. But more importantly, FAANG companies need employees who, having already gained experience, will be able to maintain a high speed of innovation in a competitive technology market with the help of fast growth skills.

What shall I do?

First of all, see that it is not written anywhere that Junior == low skilled. The vast majority of my junior colleagues are very smart guys. Is it a joke, from them, literally according to the job description, you need to understand completely new technologies for yourself, regularly and in the shortest possible time! Therefore, do not hesitate to apply for a Junior position in FAANG, even if you already have a more prestigious title at first glance. Personally, I moved from a Senior position to a Junior position twice in my career, the second time to Google. And I never once regretted this decision.

Armed with this knowledge, the reader understands how to behave in an interview for the position of L3. And also, at least, L4 and L5, because the probability of an L3 verdict is very high even when applying for these positions. The candidate is chosen based on the ability to quickly grow competencies.

When solving problems, do not give up, do not stop at a partial or suboptimal solution, do not try to finish and move on to another task. Your interview behavior will be extrapolated from the interview to the real job. Be curious, interested, adapt to changes in the situation, show pleasure in learning by asking questions or simply trying to solve tasks and reacting to the imperfection of the solution. For the Junior position, FAANG is looking for candidates with this kind of approach and skills.

If you saw yourself in this description, we are waiting for you! And if you do not agree with the definition of the Junior position by FAANG, suggest your options in the comments, I will pass them on 🙂
