what is the “laptop” from Mediaworkstations and other similar systems capable of

Short description

The a-X2P workstation from Mediaworkstations is a laptop with 6 displays, 192 cores, and 3 terabytes of DDR5 RAM. It is marketed as a portable workstation for professionals in industries such as film and television, visual effects, virtual and augmented reality, scientific research, and automatic design systems. Its motherboard is a server one with 24 slots for DDR5 RAM and four PCIe 4.0 x16 slots. The system also has two high-speed 10Gbps Base-T LAN ports, two USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports, one VGA port, and one COM port. The price has not been disclosed, but it is expected to be in the tens of thousands of US dollars. Another similar model is the Aurora 7 laptop with seven screens based on either AMD Ryzen 9 3950x or Intel Core i9-10900k processors. It has two batteries and can last up to 2 hours and 20 minutes.

what is the “laptop” from Mediaworkstations and other similar systems capable of

Sometimes electronics manufacturers produce devices whose existence is hard to believe. It seems that this is just fiction. This is the case, for example, with the a-X2P workstation from the Mediaworkstations company. As mentioned in the title, it has 6 displays, 192 cores and 3 terabytes of DDR5 RAM.

And, by the way, 6 screens is not the limit. There is a more monstrous device called Aurora 7. There are 7 displays and a lot of interesting things, although it is not a new model, sales started in 2021. About the capabilities of these systems – below.

a-X2P – what kind of beast?

This model is not new, but has received a significant number of updates. In particular, two AMD EPYC 9654 processors at once, a total of 192 cores. Technically, this is a laptop, but, of course, you are unlikely to take such a monster with you on a plane when going on another business trip.

Hence, the manufacturing company calls this system a workstation or “portable PC”. Of course, you can argue about portability, but this is not a desktop computer. Admittedly, the a-X2P is heavier than most desktops — the system weighs about 24 kg.

As for updates, AMD EPYC 7002 processors were previously installed in the system. Now they have been replaced by the EPYC 9004 series. The buyer can also choose less productive systems, 192 cores are in the top configuration “laptop”.

The Gigabyte MZ73-LM1 motherboard is equipped with 24 slots for DDR5 RAM. The maximum amount of RAM is 3 TB. The board is sold in different variations, including support for PCIe 5.0 (MZ73-LM0) and PCIe 4.0 (MZ73-LM1). The A-X2P has the latter option, with four PCIe 4.0 x16 slots. Mediaworkstations offers buyers to equip the a-X2P with two discrete graphics adapters. If the user plans to install his own video cards, the system can be ordered without them.

There is only one PCIe 4.0 x4 M.2 slot, which may seem like a disadvantage. But no, because the motherboard is a server one. Accordingly, it is equipped with other slots and ports. The Gigabyte board is equipped with one SlimSAS 4i connector with four SATA III ports and two SlimSAS 8i connectors with four PCIe 4.0 ports or 16 SATA III ports.

As for networking, the a-X2P is equipped with two high-speed 10Gbps Base-T LAN ports from Broadcom BCM57416 and one MLAN port. But there is no wireless connection “out of the box” (I would like to look at this box), which is surprising given the fact that Mediaworkstations positions the a-X2P as a portable workstation. And users get two USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports, one VGA port and one COM port.

As for the cost, it has not yet been disclosed. But you don’t need to be seven feet in the forehead to guess the price of tens of thousands of US dollars. After all, just one 96-core EPYC 9654 chip costs $11,805. And we also have a server motherboard, six screens, 3 TB of RAM, a case, an unusual configuration.

Anything else from Mediaworkstations?

Yes, three years ago, news was published on Habra about the sale of another “mobile” workstation based on AMD Ryzen Threadripper processors (3960X, 3970X, 3990X). Its mass is also about a couple of tens of kg, and the price in the maximum configuration, with a separate UPS, is $30,000. The screen, however, is one.

The workstation has a mechanical keyboard. ASRock TRX40 Creator is used as the motherboard in a-XP Portable AMD Threadripper Workstation PC. The maximum amount of installed RAM is 256 GB.

Plus, you can install two discrete video cards, Nvidia GeForce (manufactured by PNY Technologies), Titan, Quadro and Tesla (T4 or V100).

Why does the company produce such monstrous systems? It claims to be a manufacturer of solutions for professional film and television studios, specialists engaged in the development of visual effects, virtual or augmented reality, as well as for scientific research, artificial intelligence and for work in automatic design systems (CAD/CAE/CAM). . Well, in these industries, really productive equipment is needed.

Okay, what about 7 displays? It’s true?

Yes, the Aurora 7 laptop did ship (maybe still ships) with 7 screens. The system is based on AMD Ryzen 9 3950x. It’s a 16-core chip with 32 threads, a base frequency of 3.5GHz to a peak of 4.7GHz, and 14MB of L3 cache. TDP 105 W. The processor is not new – AMD introduced it back in the fall of 2019. It is manufactured according to the seven-nanometer technological process of the manufacturer TSMC.

If you don’t like AMD, then there are no problems, there is an Intel-based platform. This is the Core i9-10900k processor, which was released a few months after Ryzen 9 – in the second quarter of 2020. It has 10 cores running at a frequency of 3.7 to 5.3 GHz and supports 20 threads. The processor is made using the 14 nm process, its TDP is slightly higher than that of AMD – 135 W instead of 105 W.

The problem with graphics adapters is that the user cannot choose them. Developers install Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070, and GeForce 1060 was originally announced.

The manufacturer reports support for 128 GB of DDR4-2993 RAM. This volume is available only on platforms with an Intel processor. But buyers of the AMD-based platform are limited to 64 GB of RAM.

As for drives, the laptop is equipped with two SATA drives and two M2 drives. M2 is represented by the Samsung 970 EVO Plus with a capacity of up to 2 TB. In addition, the developers announced the transition to the 980 series SSDs after these drives go on sale. SSD capacity up to 2 TB is supported for each, so you can get up to 8 TB of disk space.

A good battery is needed to keep a voracious device running. The system has two of them at once, and the system’s battery life is 2 hours and 20 minutes.
