Valve introduced Steam Families – Steam family groups for shared access to games

On March 18, 2024, Valve introduced the Steam Families option in the beta version of the Steam client. These are Steam Family Groups with parental controls for sharing games, replacing Steam Family Sharing and Family Viewing. The Steam Families option is available for 6 people from the same region.

To access the Steam Family Groups option, you need to go to the settings in the Steam client, select “Interface” and in the subsection “Participation in the Steam client beta test” specify Steam Family Beta. After that, you need to restart the program to install the Steam beta version. Next, in the beta version of Steam, you need to go to the “About account” section and select the “Manage family groups” item.

Valve has not revealed the release date of the family groups option in the stable version of Steam.

After joining a Steam family group, users automatically get access to other members’ games. These are only games that are suitable for borrowing. The Family Library appears in Steam as a subsection in the game list.

If someone from the family group is banned for using cheats in a game from a shared library, the owner of the game will also be banned.

Members can leave a family group at any time, but they can join another group or create a new one only one year after joining the previous one. At the same time, the vacant place in the family group cannot be occupied during the year.
