Update of donations on Khabr
We are relaunching the donation function for article authors – now more payment systems (and cryptocurrencies) from different countries are supported, and you can translate and output in a few clicks.

A paragraph of background
User donations appeared in February 2019 and were warmly received by the audience – the publication announcing the innovation received 320 pluses and 0 minuses. Initially (and until today), only three payment services were supported: Yandex.Money, WebMoney and PayPal. As of 2023, the system was in an inoperable state.
Two paragraphs of statistics
There were three polls in the announcement post. According to the first, almost 89% of respondents recognized the function of donations as necessary. According to the second, 54% of respondents are ready to encourage authors of useful publications. According to the third, 45% of respondents are ready to donate up to 100 rubles for useful publications, another 47% are ready to pay from 100 to 500 rubles.
In practice, the situation turned out to be a little different: during the entire existence of the feature, it was used by X users, which is very modest – authors earn significantly more in the same PPA. And there were several main reasons for this. Among the key ones, two can be singled out: the first — not all authors knew that in the profile settings it is possible to specify the details of payment systems for donations (from February 2019 to July 2023, there were 9,660 unique authors, and only 1,234 authors set up donations in their profile); secondly, not all readers noticed the donate button under the authors’ articles. As a result – for the entire time there were no more than 3,800 donations.
💰 Little known fact: The largest one-time donation to Habre was 15,000 rubles.
Flour of choice
We had a desire to make the platform more attractive for authors, so we did not remove the idea of ”restarting” donations from the backlog. As before, there was a dilemma: either sawing everything yourself, or using some ready-made solution.
In the first case, it would be necessary to spend a lot of resources to develop a complex system, the demand of which (taking into account past experience) was in question. In the second case, it would be about transferring the commission to a third-party counterparty, which takes on all the work with payments. We are not greedy (in the initial implementation we did not earn anything), but finding the right service for convenient payments (which would work everywhere) turned out to be difficult. But we seem to have found it, so we present to you Donaty 2.0. We have decided not to remove the old donats yet – we left them as an alternative method.
Habr × destream
That was the name of the chat with colleagues from destream — a donation platform for content creators.
Three simple steps:
-
Register on the destream service and confirm the registration by mail.
-
Go to the profile settings on Habra and in the “Payment details” section link the account (you will be redirected to Habra Account for linking) and enable the display of the donation button under the articles.
-
Write useful articles! Do not forget to enable 2FA on the service for withdrawing funds.
How it will work:
Any user will see the “Donate” button at the end of your article, next to your nickname.
Clicking the button will open a pop-up window where you can specify the amount, as well as the name of the sender (can be anonymous) or a comment.
Next, press “Pay”, specify a convenient payment method (for many, it will probably be “CIS Card” – do not forget to turn off the VPN) ІІІ is ready!
The author of the article will receive money and can withdraw it at any moment in a way convenient for him.
Nuances:
-
So far, the minimum amount for a donation is 400 rubles, but we hope that it will soon be possible to reduce it.
-
The minimum withdrawal amount is 10 euros.
-
The size of the commission for the conclusion is 4.77%.
Of course, I do not insist, but I am such a person that I refuse to test a new feature on the example of this publication – all translations, as last time, will be donated to charity.
Thank you all for your attention and good luck!
