Update KB5031354 for Windows 11 causes errors in Explorer and crashes Starfield and other games

Windows 11 October 2023 Update crashes the highly anticipated Starfield and other Microsoft games with error code 0x89245106. It also causes Explorer to crash.

The crashes were reported on X, Reddit, and the Windows Latest forum. Error code 0x89245106 indicates that the OS was unable to identify the user for the standard game.

“I have the same problem. Can’t play Forza, Starfield or Lies of P after the latest Windows update,” writes one Reddit user. Another user reported that he reinstalled Windows 11 game services, but that didn’t help. Some have pointed out that only uninstalling the problematic update fixed the game crashes.

In addition to game crashes, users reported problems with other services. Yes, in some cases, right-clicking on the Start icon and selecting Explorer or Settings causes Explorer to crash immediately. Users note that the update in general significantly slowed down the performance of Explorer.

The October 2023 Update is the last mandatory security update for Windows 11 22H2. While the official support document doesn’t mention bugs in the update, a message from Microsoft in the Feedback Center confirms that the company aware of the glitches has already released a fix.

“Thank you for taking the time to report this. This error should be fixed by now. If you continue to experience it, please send feedback detailing which game you’re running so the team can look into it,” Microsoft said.
