Ukrainian polar explorers showed a video of bearded penguins with babies for the first time
Ukrainian polar explorers currently working at the “Vernadskyi” station have for the first time published a video of Antarctic penguins with babies that were born recently.
They said that Antarctic penguins are also called “chinstrap” or “bearded” because of the thin black stripe that crosses the white chin. They are considered the most massive species in the Antarctic and number about 7.5 million pairs.
“The mating season of these birds usually begins in October-November. They lay two eggs, sometimes one or three. In a little more than a month, baby penguins emerge from them. At first, they are covered with light gray down, which darkens over time on the head, wings and back. Both partners take turns in hatching the eggs and taking care of the children,” described the family life of penguins.
The video with the chicks was made by biologist Vadym Tkachenko while working on But Island, located in the “Vernadskyi” district. This year, 15 Chinstrapenia kittens were born there. In general, a small colony of bearded vultures nests here.
According to polar explorers, the peculiarity of But Island is that it is here that all three species of penguins of the genus Pygoscelis, found in the area of the Ukrainian station, nest at the same time. These are sub-Antarctic, Antarctic penguins and Adélie.
Sometimes Ukrainian biologists met the neighborhood of three species on other islands, but rather as an exception.
We will remind, recently polar explorers too showedhow green is the summer in the Antarctic.
