User discovered, that his smart LG washing machine consumes a total of 3.66 GB of traffic per day. And 3.57 GB is consumed by the Upload process, only 96 MB by Download.
According to the device description, the washing machine internet is required to download custom washing instructions. But these data cannot be measured in gigabytes, because there is no large storage inside the washing machine, but a special mini-PC is installed to manage and control all elements for washing.
Professional experts in the comments to the publication explained that in this case, the smart washing machine probably connects to a third-party Wi-Fi botnet and drives traffic, for example, for DDoS attacks. In their opinion, LG developers were unlikely to use this amount of traffic to monitor the state of the smart device, although the device transmits this data over an encrypted channel using TLS/SSL.
Other experts suggested that the machine went into an endless cycle of downloading the update, but could not install it, so it kept repeating connection attempts from the LG server, although the necessary files had been downloaded once before.
As a result, the user blocked Internet access to the washing machine in the settings of his router. The device continued to work as before, but now it does not sit constantly on the Internet.
