The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on cooperation between countries in the field of artificial intelligence

The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on the development and international cooperation in the field of artificial intelligence. It was called “Using the opportunities of safe, secure and reliable artificial intelligence systems for sustainable development”, according to the organization’s website.

The resolution was proposed by the USA, and more than 100 other countries became co-authors of the document. US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield called it “groundbreaking” and said the document strengthens the consensus on safe and reliable artificial intelligence systems.

In total, the resolution consists of 13 points. It calls for increasing the participation of developing countries in the digital transformation. In particular, the document proposes to implement measures to comply with intellectual property rights and strive to ensure the protection of personal data, as well as transparency, predictability and reliability of the work of II. In addition, the authors of the resolution call to promote that all automated decisions and processes remain under the control of a living person.

All 193 states of the UN General Assembly voted for the adoption of the resolution.

In July last year, the UN Security Council held its first-ever meeting on artificial intelligence. Then Secretary General António Guterres proposed to create a UN-based body that would create global standards for the regulation of sphere II. According to Guterres, the development of AI can cause serious threats to global security, both in military and non-military ways of using artificial intelligence.
