The number of Google One subscribers reached 100 million
The number of owners of paid Google One subscriptions has reached 100 million people, Google CEO Sundar Picha said. A subscription unlocks additional storage for free Google services, including Gmail, Drive, and Photos, as well as access to many other features.
Reaching 100 million Google One subscribers highlights the corporation’s efforts to transition users from free plans. For example, Google removed the unlimited storage “Drive” for photos.
It took YouTube Premium nine years to reach the same result, thanks to the lack of ads and additional features such as music and high-quality video playback. Google also recently changed its policy regarding ad blockers on YouTube.
Google reported approaching 100 million Google One subscribers when it released its financial results for the fourth quarter of 2023 last month. From this information, it became known that the corporation spent $2.1 billion on severance pay and other costs related to the layoffs of more than 12,000 people in 2023.
In just one month of 2024, Google sent $700 million to compensate laid-off workers.
The company also launched the Google One AI Premium plan, which is similar to the existing $100-a-year Google One plan, which includes 2 TB of storage and other features, including VPN and darknet monitoring. Only Google One AI Premium costs twice as much – $200. It gives users access to an enhanced version of the Gemini chatbot, formerly Bard, and generative AI features for Gmail, Docs, and other services. To connect to Google One AI Premium, you need to cancel your subscription to classic Google One.
Last summer, Google announced the change of Google One VPN’s default IP address from public to local in order to improve users’ Internet experience.
