The Japanese company introduced Aroma Speaker 60 – speakers that transmit smells

The Japanese company Aromajoin presented Aroma Speaker 60 – speakers that not only reproduce sound, but also transmit smells. The device was shown at the Consumer Electronics Show CES 2024.

The manufacturer did not reveal the mechanism of the technical implementation of the smell synthesizer, but it is known that it is reduced to a set of aromatic modules located in each speaker – ten modules in two columns. Each module includes six cartridges with essential oils of base scents, from which all others are formed. A system controlled by software on a laptop combines the substances in these cartridges to create the finished fragrances.

In total, the speakers are able to transmit about 60 different smells at a distance of up to 2 m. The publication Yankodesign notes that the Aroma Speaker 60 smells are distinct and pleasant, without a “chemical” aftertaste.

Aromajoin is not yet ready to release the speakers for open sale — now the company is looking for investors and developers to finalize the concept. The creators note that the speakers will be an excellent choice for immersion in VR metaworlds, video games and movies. The manufacturer offers a software tools package (SDK) to help content creators combine video with scent for an immersive effect.
