New cheap card from AMD with RX 7900 XTX/RTX 4090 performance expected this year

Rumors about AMD’s next-generation RDNA 4 GPU architecture, as well as TSMC’s Navi 44 and Navi 48 graphics cards, are actively discussed in the community.

According to the same rumors, samples of Strix APU engineering solutions and RDNA 4 discrete GPUs with a clock frequency of 3.0 to 3.3 GHz have appeared. This is reported by the YouTuber Moore’s Law is Dead, who specializes in the inside of new consumer equipment. The crystal size will probably be 300-350 mm², with 20 Gb/s of GDDR6 memory on a 256-bit controller, which is suitable for the performance of the PS5 Pro console, which is expected to be released in November 2024, that is, at the same time as new products from AMD should arrive on the market.

The same report claims that the gaming performance of the new product will be between the Radeon RX 7900 XT (RTX 4080 equivalent) and Radeon RX 7900 XTX (RTX 4090 equivalent) graphics cards produced on the basis of the RDNA 3 architecture. The prices are expected to be 4000 from Nvidia and definitely below the discussed and expected Blackwell 5000 series cards.

And for $700 and $900, AMD gives its consumers 20 and 24 Gb of video memory, when such volumes are available only on the RTX 4090

In terms of release dates, RDNA 4 graphics cards are expected to arrive in the fourth quarter of 2024, with a slight possibility of a release in the third quarter of 2024 or a postponement to the first quarter of 2025. It is also possible to use GDDR6 memory for the new cards on the Navi 44 and Navi 48, as it is reported that AMD is actively testing GDDR7 for multi-chip graphics cards.

If these rumors are confirmed, it means that the RDNA 4 cards are in the process of active development and are almost ready for such a release. At first glance, their performance can match the performance level of the RX 7900 XTX, which is already an excellent card capable of competing with Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 4090. The only thing in which this card is still seriously inferior to Nvidia products is retracing.

Add to that the fact that they will likely be released at a lower price point compared to Nvidia’s 40-series graphics accelerators, and this is a real threat to Nvidia’s market dominance. According to rumors, the price could be very affordable: around $500 for an RTX 4080-level card, which would make AMD’s new products a more attractive purchase for the consumer who is not chasing flagship configurations.
