Meta* will begin integrating news from Reuters into its AI chatbot

Meta* and Reuters have entered into a multi-year agreement to integrate the agency’s news into Meta* AI chatbots. This is Meta’s first such agreement with a news agency, which will allow the company to use Reuters materials to answer current user questions. Meta*’s Jamie Redich said the partnership will enhance the chatbot’s functionality by providing users with brief overviews and links to Reuters content. Meta* AI is primarily used for creative tasks and recommendations, but the update will make the service more useful for those interested in current events.

Company Reuters has confirmed the deal, and its terms remain confidential. According to the data AxiosReuters will be compensated for the use of its material. News links will start appearing for users in the US on the company’s platforms from Friday.

Meta*’s move reflects growing interest from tech companies in licensing news, confirming deals with OpenAI by publications such as The Atlantic and The Wall Street Journal. As the head of The Atlantic, Nicholas Thompson, noted, licensing agreements help the media adapt to the changes associated with the development of AI.

However, not all media welcome such integration. The New York Times sued OpenAI and Microsoft, alleging that the companies violated its copyright in the process of training its AI models.

Meta* is also taking a controversial stance on news: while the chatbot will use content from Reuters, management has publicly said it will ditch news and political content on the company’s social media channels, such as Threads. Meta* actively opposes laws that require news publishers to be compensated for content on social networks, as happened in Canada, where the company completely blocked access to news.
