Khabr – Results of 2023

So, the year is 2023. A planet with a high probability of the existence of life has been discovered, they are learning to print a heart on a 3D printer, steps have been taken in the fight against cancer and dementia, the first drugs for Alzheimer’s disease have been approved and a drug for Bechterew’s disease has been developed, an eye has been completely transplanted, GPT-4 has been launched and the whole – And this is only a small part of the results of the year. The year 2023, like all others, gave us a lot of new things in science, career, changed something in everyone’s life. Habr also changed: somewhere noticeably, somewhere not so much, at the level of logic, to make it a little faster and more pleasant for each user. Traditionally, at the end of the year, we counted everyone and share the most important with the most important: with users, readers and guests of Habra.

Let’s talk about the period from January 1 to December 26, 2023 in Habra:

During this time, Khabri was registered 120,289 users (last year there were 109,140). That is, on average, about 10,000 users arrive per month. 333 per day. Moreover, by the end of the year, with a number of innovations, we managed to almost double the number of registrations (up to ~750 at the peak) without harming anything on the site. Bad mouths see newbies as bots and think that we are growing the audience out of desperation, but no – we are simply increasing the percentage of registered users (all these years it was very small) from the total number of visitors.

In 2023, 969 people could not cope with the temptation to break the rules and went to Read-only (indefinitely or temporarily). Last year, this fate befell 1,376 users.

A total of 1,581,750 users are registered on Habri:

  • 116,540 – Full rights

  • 8077 β€” Read&Comment (can comment without pre-moderation)

  • 82,847 – Read&Comment (can comment with moderation)

  • 1,374,286 – Read-only

If it was last year 1165 unique authors (who wrote at least one publication) and 12,590 of unique commentators (who wrote at least one comment), this year the number of authors has almost tripled: 3349! The number of commentators has also grown decently – to 20,977.

Everything has been published 34,998 publications that have been collected in total 227,578 857 views

It was last year 30,581 publication on 212 million views (at the time of writing, i.e. December 25, 2022). However, if you download the data for the year 2022 now, it will turn out that the articles have already received a total of 285 million views (I assumed that it would be 300) – that is, the delta for the publication of 2022 has reached 73 million views! What am I for? To the point that many mistakenly say: “I’m looking at my posts from five years ago – they have tens of thousands of views, unlike now“, – there is a huge error in this statement. At the same time, I do not deny that now it is not easy for some publications to gain the attention of readers – partly because the amount of attention of the user has remained approximately the same, and the number of publications has increased.

To read all posts, you need 187,515 minutes – This is 3125 hours or 130 days. In fact, this value is even greater, because we do not take into account the time of reading posts. And if you add comments here, then probably this number can be multiplied by two.

In 2023, users wrote 605,192 comments and they did 809,973 bookmarking posts. That year there were 562,210 comments and 680,641 bookmarks.

1769 publications received a rating higher than +50, that is, the authors were invited. Last year there were 1,611 such publications.

Conclusions: articles, as before, more than half, transfers became less in percentage (almost 7%, but by no means half, as some say) – because we introduced a lowering coefficient in the rating formula (and many companies that previously “left” at their expense, they will no longer be able to do so). Posts are our new essence, to which the audience is still getting used to, but which should not be feared now.

Composition of publications by authorship

  • Custom: 11,921 (34.06%) for 95,716,621 views

  • Corporate: 11,625 (33.22%) on 78,832,377 views

  • From the information service: 11,452 (32.72%) on 48,350,486 views

If last year editorial materials were 37%, and the number of corporate publications exceeded user publications by half a percent, then this year the “pie” is almost as uniform as a Mercedes badge. Seems like a good balance for everyone equally!

Schedule by rating (2023/2022):

  • 30,454 (87.0% / 88.92%) publications received a positive rating

  • 2,365 (6.8% / 5.74%) publications have a zero rating

  • 1769 (6.2% / 5.34%) publications received a negative rating

A significant part of publications with a zero rating is our new format (posts), which remained inconspicuous for a long time (because we refined them in 4 iterations) and in general are immediately visible to the audience. Recently, they began to appear in the general feed – we do not expect that their rating will suddenly increase, but we will see what happens next.

Otherwise, the following conclusion suggests itself: “marriage” (rejected by the community) is not so much (and 1063 publications were removed to drafts); 9 out of 10 publications turn out to be positive, that is, Khabr is not as angry as he is portrayed to be. But yes, friends, let’s try to be even kinder πŸ™‚

This year, we finally closed support for the old version of Habra and changed a lot of work processes, which helped us significantly speed up development.

In a year: 113 releases, of which 58 fell on the backend and 55 on the frontend. Last year there were 99 releases: 50 in the back and 49 in the front.

If you count in tasks, then this 2258 tasks at the current moment, 1,374 working days have been contracted.

Quality composition: tasks – 1131bugs – 752improvement 134, The rest is for ideas, experiments and new functionality – the exact number is difficult to calculate due to the change in workflow. And for the sake of bugs, I’ll order a word: basically, this is what was caught at the testing stage, that is, it didn’t even appear on the market. At the front this year there was 815 tickets, in the past β€” 672.

We have been talking about visible changes in the changelog for the second year.

Sandbox remains the main provider of full users. This year it came out of the sandbox into the world 2 429 publications, 370 materials are waiting for an invitation in the public sandbox, rejected 8,354 articles. In that year, 1,944 publications came out of the sandbox, 6,544 were rejected.

It was received by the Khabr helpdesk 21,305 of appeals (~59 per day) to which it was written 8,932 answers The “inappropriate” part is various user complaints and comments that we consider unilaterally. A total of 55,173 requests (~151 per day) were received (in total for our projects), with 19,804 responses.

We have dedicated support for corporate blogs (because they live inside the administration panel) β€” there were more than 564 requests for Habr and 4,871 for Habr Career.

We openly publish information about requests received by Habra. In 2023, there were 5 strikes from RosKomNadzor (we dispute some of the publications) and no requests from law enforcement agencies. A few more appeals were satisfied on the topic of copyright.

One of the innovations this year was the appearance of geographical restrictions.

This year, users have not found any vulnerabilities in our services, thu-thu-thu. We have not yet become participants in public bug bounty programs, but we have several offers from market leaders – we will use them in the new year. And so our non-public bug bounty program continues to operate β€” if you find something, write to me (you can contact me directly).

We understand that everyone approaches the new year with different moods and different thoughts, we all look to the future with hope, fears, worries and faith in the best. However, we know for sure that in the new year there will be new scientific discoveries, technological experiments, events and breakthroughs in IT, cool DIY projects, numerous articles and posts, thousands of comments and pluses. There will be Khabr, and we, in turn, will continue to make it the best, relevant, interesting and main IT god for each of you. Thank you for being with us in the past year!

Happy New Year, people of Khabarovsk!
