In Signal 7.0, it was possible to use nicknames instead of phone numbers for all users

March 5, 2024 by Signal Developers reportedthat their encrypted messaging app version 7.0 added the ability to use nicknames instead of phone numbers for all users.

Signal tested this option during February with a limited group of users. Now each user can add an additional name, which will allow you to communicate with other clients of the messenger without giving your phone number.

According to Signal’s explanation:

  • the user’s phone number is now not available to everyone by default, only those who have added the user to contacts can see it;

  • you can use a nickname in the messenger, it will be visible to everyone. At the same time, the nickname and user name can be different;

  • You can prevent users from searching for you by phone number. It will be possible to find the profile only if the exact nickname is known. In other cases, you cannot start a new chat with the user or even check the fact of Signal registration;

  • The messenger does not necessarily require creating nicknames, this function will be optional.

Project developers specified that nicknames in Signal do not act as logins, as in social networks. It’s just a quick way to contact users without revealing their phone number. Nicknames can be used to create links or QR codes to quickly navigate to your profile. You still need to enter a phone number to sign up for Signal.
