Google is working on a service mode that ensures the safety of personal data during repairs

Journalist Mishaal Rahman (Mishaal Rahman) said that Google is developing a system for the safe transfer of smartphones for repair. Users can protect their confidential data. A similar function is already available in Samsung devices.

In service mode, Android simulates a factory reset. To do this, a dynamic system update mechanism is used, but instead of loading a generic OS image, a source image with a new set of user data is loaded.

After activating the service mode, the smartphone can be sent to the service center for repair. Its employees will not be able to access user data. Instead, the system will be similar to a factory reset.

When activating the mode, the user needs to come up with a code that is stored in memory and is not deleted if the smartphone is rebooted. The same code will be needed to exit the mode and return to normal operation.

Support for maintenance mode has already been added to AOSP, but it is disabled by default because some manufacturers may already have a similar feature. In the near future, the mode will be integrated into the settings and the launcher will appear.

Samsung smartphones support this mode. When it is activated, user data and downloaded programs are hidden. Access can be obtained only to those that were on the smartphone during its activation.
