Games of our childhood: 8-bit masterpieces
We talked about before the era of Flash games. But the 1990s for most children of that time, and not only children, are primarily games on Dendy with shooting ducks at the TV, sometimes – “Syubor” which was in the form of a keyboard, and for the really rich and lucky people – and Sega Mega Drive and Super Nintendo.
This time we have collected the most popular 8-bit video games, modern games from Russian developers for this platform,
In addition, we will dive into the incredible world of peripherals for the Nintendo Entertainment System – gloves for controlling games, virtual reality helmets, printers and more.
What do you think of the idea of rating video games on Dendy? Write in the comments what you remember the most, what are the best childhood memories and what would you play right now!

Top 10 selling NES games
For now, we are just preparing the rating under the conditional name “Games that have passed the test of time” with your help, friends, I suggest you look at the rating of the most popular games on the NES. Of course, it is, to put it mildly, “slightly” different from the games in Russia.
-
Super Mario Bros.
-
Duck hunting.
-
Super Mario Bros. 3.
-
Tetris.
-
Super Mario Bros. 2.
-
The Legend of Zelda.
-
Dr. mario
-
Zelda II: The Adventure of Link.
-
Excitebike.
-
Golf.
The rating is quite expected. First, Super Mario occupies four positions at once – because it is the symbol of Nintendo, which came with the console. And duck hunting – it came with a set-top box and a light gun. It makes no sense to comment on Tetris. Dr. Mario on Tetris, by the way, is very similar – also a glass, but with pills of different colors.
“Dandy”: a new reality
NES games reached Russia through the Dendy platform. If you didn’t have it when you were a child, it means that you watched airplay on Serhiy Suponev’s show or went to your friends. And now you can plunge into 1995 for 25 minutes.
The author of the console was Viktor Savyuk. It was he who came to the “Stipler” company, offered to start selling set-top boxes with cartridges and headed the business. Viktor Savyuk entered Hall of Fame of the video game industry of Russia.
Interesting fact. The company Steepler, importing the same Dendy into the country, did not violate Nintendo’s rights. She was buying a Taiwanese Famicom clone. Over a million dollars and three months of work were spent on branding. And later, they even found a company in Taiwan that tested consoles. They checked the quality and safety of plastic for children. The story is very interesting – it was published on Khabra here.
This video, released in 1993, went viral.
The same situation with the set-top box was in Russia. When I was in Brazil (as part of a business mission Irvey) at the video game museum of the University of Porto Alegre, we discussed the clone that was in this country. And the Brazilians were proud of their clone and the fact that their set-top box was of higher quality and better than the original. And that market was probably important to Nintendo, which is why the company was against the release of a Famicom clone.
Many cartridges were sold in Russia. They were often produced by companies completely unrelated to Steepler and Nintendo. Some contained thousands of video games.
Legendary games of our childhood
If you remember when the “Disney Club” started, then cartoon games may be especially important for you. For example, “Aladdin”, “Chip and Dale”, “Black cloak”, “Duck stories”.
Interestingly, Aladdin was originally released on the 16-bit Super NES, but managed to be ported to the 8-bit console, preserving the atmosphere and almost preserving the graphics. It was probably one of Dendy’s most beautiful games at the time. “Aladdin” in spirit is very similar to “Prince of Persia”, which appeared in 1989 on the Apple II.
In “Chip and Dale” it was necessary to play together, because it allowed you to pick up a teammate and throw him into the abyss or the enemy. A perfect excuse for sibling squabbles, followed by throwing joysticks at a kinescope, maybe even a black-and-white screen.
The game about Felix the cat was distinguished by a large number of vehicles. It had a tank, a spaceship, a dolphin, and an airplane.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, especially their pseudo-3D third, was a great series of games. It was especially interesting to play together. Each turtle had its own unique tricks and skills.
“The Flintstones” are familiar to many from the cartoon series and the movie. Fun game for kids and adults.
Action games were not made in such a picturesque style. Think of the oppressive atmosphere of The Terminator, RoboCop, and Terminator vs. RoboCop.
The game Mortal Kombat, on the contrary, itself became an occasion for shooting films, series and animated series. First, it was released on arcade machines, then on consoles such as Super NES and Sega. And pirates from Asia have already ported it to Dendy, which allowed children to play dozens, if not hundreds of different versions of the game of varying degrees of sophistication. Some versions were quite good quality. On the computer, of course, the graphics were better.
Sports games like hockey, football, motocross could be played for hours. Especially when there was an opportunity to do it together.
The graphics in the competition on Dendy looked stunning. As now in the last parts of NFS. But only until you played Need For Speed III on the first Sony PlayStation.
From arcade machines came the game Galaxian. You are a fighter pilot who must save the earth from alien invaders. Another game that, despite the simple gameplay, could occupy a child for several hours.
What review of NES games would be complete without the genius Hideo Kojima? In 1987, Metal Gear was released on the NES and a number of other platforms. In fact, thanks to this series, we got an entire genre of stealth action video games. The main character, Solid Snake, was modeled by Kojima from Snake Pliskin, who was played by Kurt Russell in the movie “Escape from New York”. And the gameplay was invented, in particular, thanks to the films about James Bond.
Were games created for Dandy in Russia? Yes, and it wasn’t just translations and ports. Examplethere was an educational game “Guess”, “Sea Battle”, “Field of Miracles”.
One of the first authors of Russian games for Dandy was Oleksandr Chudov. He also made “Balda”, “Fortuna”, “Traffic Rules”. “Travel across Europe”. And for the Sega Mega Drive, he made a code breaker. According to the information that was found, Oleksandr continues to work in the field of military electronics.

It is surprising, but even now for old consoles against the background of love for retro, they probably do absolutely new video games.
In 2009, a Russian developer with the nickname AnS made Binary City – this is a mod of the famous “dancers”. Only you have to control two tanks at once, which move in a mirror image to each other. So you have to keep an eye on them at the same time in order to shoot at the right moment and not catch a projectile from an enemy tank.
And this is footage from Black Jewel Reborn, which studio PSCD is porting to the SNES.
How about you? Dune 2 on Dandy?
Periphery
You may remember the short film Kung Fury, and the hacker guy in it that became a meme. On the character’s right hand is a Power Glove for Nintendo. Something very similar was in the movie “Nightmare on Elm Street”. In 1989, it cost $80. More than 100,000 units were sold in the US.
It was one of the first video game controllers capable of tracking the position of the player’s hand in space. For this, special receivers were placed on the TV. It is very similar to how modern similar systems like PS Eye work.
IN excerpt from the film “Magician» you can see how the system worked. Judging by the phrase “I love PowerGlove. It’s so bad” – not very good.
Advertising:
If the PowerGlove could be used even for Super Mario, then the 3D glasses are already for a limited number of video games – only for eight. The gadget was sold only in Japan.
The device works as follows: on each eye in the glasses – shutters; they close their eyes in turn; the screen alternately shows images for the left and right eyes with the same frequency. The result is a three-dimensional picture. But only with a TV with a kinescope.
And this robot named ROB allowed play up to two games! The probability that you even knew about its existence is minimal. Did you have one? Write in the comments.
The internet was made for Nintendo jokes in 1988. Even before the advent of the modern Internet, the Family Computer Network System allowed you to see data about stock market trading, learn about readings in video games, and monitor the weather forecast.
