Frequencies for 5G have been approved in Russia
The Russian government has approved a new version of the radio frequency allocation table. The range of 4.4–4.99 GHz has been allocated for the development of “communication networks taking into account promising radio technologies of the mobile service”, which are called 5G networks.
Before the start of the auctions, the government and business representatives will have to clear the range of third-party equipment that is not related to cellular communication. At the same time, it is necessary to develop the conditions for frequency distribution.
For a long time, mobile operators have tried to achieve the allocation of the 3.4-3.8 GHz band, which is currently occupied by special services. It is noted that developing 5G at frequencies of 4.4-4.99 GHz will cost more. This is due to the fact that not many base stations and smartphones are compatible with the band.
In addition, VimpelCom representatives note that the issue of the release of domestic equipment supporting 5G is still open. International companies rarely produce base stations focused on the 4.4-4.99 GHz band. Because of this, a very small amount of subscriber equipment can work with the frequencies. For example, the iPhone 13, 14 and 15 support them, but the new flagships from Samsung do not.
Journalists of “Izvestia” report that according to international rules, the new range is closed for use in some parts of the country. Base stations operating in the 4.8-4.95 GHz band are prohibited from being installed closer than 300 kilometers from a land border and 450 kilometers from a sea border. This is necessary to protect neighboring states from obstacles.
