for a long time, Brave installed its VPN client without the option to opt out, the company promises to fix everything / Habr

Journalists from GHacks reported that since 2022, Windows users have been downloading the Brave browser together with the company’s VPN client. This action could not be refused, and the company clearly did not warn about downloading additional software. Journalists believe that this is not the best action for a company that is built on transparency and openness.

In 2022, Brave users got the opportunity to connect the Firewall + VPN tariff for $10 per month. It provides access to a proprietary firewall and VPN service. But on Windows, a VPN client was installed along with the browser on the PC. Users were not warned about this, so the additional software was simply on the device and turned on only after purchasing a subscription.

After publicity in the media, Brian Clifton, Brave’s vice president of development and technology, commented on the situation, noting that the team will change the software distribution system in the near future. Now the VPN client and all additional software will be uploaded only after the user has signed up for a subscription. You can now check the presence of Brave services on the system using the task manager, they are marked as Brave VPN and Brave Wireguard.

You can uninstall apps yourself, but Brave will download them again after a while. To prevent this from happening, you need to uninstall the browser and install it without administrator rights. The developers have promised to fix this behavior of Brave as well.
