five fan remakes of Fallout / Habr

five fan remakes of Fallout / Habr

Bongiorno, my golden ones! This is Idar Tabukhov, a scrum master at MTS Digital and a fan of computer games. There are a lot of Fallout fans out there, and I’m no exception. Moreover, I more or less got almost all the parts, including Fallout 76 (don’t beat me). If you’ve already played everything on the market and are waiting for Fallout 5, then you can entertain yourself while you wait with fan remakes. Among them are both frankly amateur versions and those made by professionals. Five famous and not so remakes are under execution. Of course, there are more of them, so if you know of others, write in the comments. Maybe then I’ll come back with the second part of the selection. So far, let’s go!

Fallout: Vault 13

The essence of the remake: Fallout 1 moves to Wednesday Fallout 4 (2015), Creation Engine

This is a fan remake of the very first, canonical, Fallout from 1997. The game was made on the Fallout 4 engine. The authors tried to create a modern version that would repeat the main script moves of the original.

The demo is already ready (link below), it was released back in August. Only one of the five major zones that the final version will be split into is accessible in it, including Vaults 13 and 15, Shady Sands Village, and the Khan Base. Unfortunately, there is no voice acting for the characters – simply because the project is not the main project for the developers, it is their hobby. Therefore, the development of the game is progressing more slowly than many would like. Voice integration takes a lot of time, so we decided to postpone it for later.

There is another problem – a bug that does not allow you to automatically adjust the level of development of the character’s skills when changing characteristics. Fallout 4 with all official DLC is required to play this version. This is what the game looks like:

Unfortunately, it is not known when the final release will be released: the authors are not ready to name the date. But the fact that there is already a demo version inspires hope for the successful completion of the project in the future. Now the authors are working together with the Fallout 4: Project Arroyo remake team (development of the second part of Fallout).

Requirements:

  • All major DLC and/or Fallout 4: GOTY Edition.

  • Fallout 4 must be updated to a version prior to the next-gen update (1.10.163). You can use downgrade. Also, you need to delete the Creation Club content in the Data folder, if it’s there.

  • Fallout 4 Script Extender (F4SE).

You can download it here.

Fallout 4: Project Arroyo

The essence of the remake: Fallout 2 moves to Wednesday Fallout 4 (2015), Creation Engine

I already said above what kind of project it is. The team, which includes 100 people at once, plans to release a remake in the next few months. There are even plans for a Steam release. Recently, the developers gave an interview to journalists, and here are some interesting details from it:

  • In the remake of Fallout 2, the locations are collected together – into a single new world. Therefore, the team does not intend to repeat the original. That is, everything is similar, but not an exact copy.

  • In the new game, unfortunately, it will not be possible to make a moving car. The hero will get into the car, after which he will be able to quickly move around the map. Roughly the same mechanics were in Fallout 2. But Fallout 4’s game engine is too complex to develop a moving car with it.

  • Frank Horrigan, remember him? So he will become a full-fledged boss with whom you can fight at various stages of the passage. Much like it is with Adam Smasher’s Cyberpunk 2077.

  • Developers will voice each character. The authors of the modification were forbidden to use the voice acting from the original game, so they decided to do everything themselves, from scratch.

“We want to bring the game back to its full deserved glory. We’ll be adding skills, perks, weapons, locations, NPCs, and everything in between for a complete experience. Our team worked incredibly hard and we managed to finish our first city – Modok”– says one of its participants about the project.

There is no demo version, so we have to make do with interviews, pictures, videos and rumors. In order not to be bored, download Pip-Battle 3000 for Fallout 4.

Fallout 4: Capital Wasteland

The essence of the remake: Fallout 3 moves to Wednesday Fallout 4 (2015), Creation Engine

In the early 2000s, Bethesda and Zenimax acquired the rights to a game called Fallout: A Post-Apocalypse Role Playing Game originally written by Interplay and Black Isle Studios. In 2008, they released their first game in the franchise called Fallout 3.

Now a team of enthusiasts is going to modernize this game, bringing the world of Fallout 3 to the graphical environment of Fallout 4. The entire Wasteland is being rebuilt, adding quests, dialogues and all locations. There is not much information about the game, you can follow the progress in Team Discord.

And four years ago, the trailer for this remake appeared. Make a mistake:

There is no specific release date for the project, work on it is still ongoing. But there is news: the team announced that they will make a remake of Broken Steel, the third addition for Fallout 3. It is dedicated to the struggle between the Brotherhood of Steel and the Enclave factions: the hero had to stand up for one of the sides of the conflict.

Here project site.

Fallout 4: New Vegas

The essence of the remake: Fallout: New Vegas (2010) moves to Wednesday Fallout 4 (2015), Creation Engine

The history of the project is very interesting, as it proceeded in two stages. Until 2017, one team was working on it, but the process stopped due to disputes between the participants. Then there was the second stage, with a new team, which included some of the authors of the previous one.

Everything goes relatively smoothly here. The only major problem was due to dubbing – the project was not given the opportunity to use the original audio materials of Fallout: New Vegas (2010). Therefore, the participants decided to redub everything and everything on their own.

The mechanics that users saw in New Vegas will appear in the game: karma, reputation, disguise. But there will be no copy of the game world and mechanics. First, because it is difficult. Secondly, to make it more interesting. Fans of the original game will be able to enjoy the Mojave Wasteland and the interiors carried over to Fallout 4.

The last update inFacebook group the project dates back to July 2023. INX social networks messages appear more regularly – the latest from August 2024. When the release will come out, and whether there will be one at all, remains to be guessed. But no one talked about the difference, so let’s hope for the best.

Fallout: The Story

The essence of the remake: Fallout 1 on the Fallout: New Vegas engine

Fallout: The Story is a fan remake of the first part of Fallout on the Fallout: New Vegas engine. A small part of the world of Fallout 1 is available to the gamer, which includes Shelter 13, Shelter 15, Shady Sands and Junktown. The mod contains voiced NPCs, and those characters who were mute in the original. The developers also pay special attention to the authenticity of dialogues and quests.

Fallout: The Story uses more modern mechanics than the original version of the game. These are the camera from the first or third person, dynamic battles, the VATS system from Fallout: New Vegas and other features that were implemented in the later parts of the series.

Download the alpha version you can here.

Well, Fallout lovers, that’s it for today. If you’ve played any of the remakes or mods of the original versions, let us know how you liked them in the comments. Well, add more remakes!
