Do not give money to third parties

Do not give money to third parties

Official statistics on fraud using banking operations are provided on the website of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation (https://www.cbr.ru/analytics/ib/operations_survey_2022/).

So far, the information is only for 2022, but still: more than 14 billion rubles. stolen

The amount is quite large, for comparison, the budget of the city of Tver for 2022 was about 10 billion rubles.

And you may be surprised where such money comes from, isn’t so much scraped from grandmothers?

I remembered that a year ago, an acquaintance complained that her cousin received an inheritance of 1 million rubles, and not much time passed when she received a call allegedly from Sber and then standard schemes… him, not wanting it himself, as they say, to third parties .

It turns out that money is given not only to grandparents, who do not really understand what banking is, but also to middle-aged people who use all the charms of DBO (remote banking) every day.

What will the article be about? Rather, it is about the general principles of security of your bank account without technical details.

Why the article? So that you can keep yourself in your hands and not be influenced by the actions of fraudsters, and also talk to your parents, grandparents, about fraud with bank accounts.

Great news

Although the news is not fresh, it does not diminish the joy:

It will be necessary to reimburse the client if the bank allowed the transfer of funds to a fraudulent account located in a special database of the Bank of Russia. He must do this within 30 calendar days after receiving a statement from the victim. Such law adopted by the State Duma.

News on the website of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation (https://cbr.ru/press/event/?id=16898).

Now there is some hope to get your money back if you have already fallen for the fraudsters.

But how the law will work in practice and how easy it will be to prove that you are not a camel are open questions. Therefore, let’s proceed from the logic that it is easier not to get stuck in the poop than to wash up afterwards.

Little about the work of banks

The bank works, very precisely. Since the resource is devoted to IT, most readers probably know what a transaction is.

For clarity, I took a couple of terminologies from the websites of banks and banking services. Let’s go from a simplified concept to a more complete one.

Transaction in simple words – any payment by bank card.

Transactionit transactions using a bank account.

Transactionit a logically completed banking transaction, which consists in the transfer of a certain amount of money from the account of one person to the account of another.

Personally, I prefer the 3rd option (even if it is simplified, but it conveys the meaning).

Let’s find the key in the term “transaction”. In our case, this is a “completed banking transaction”.

And so, when the bank carries out an operation, it has 2 states: executed or not executed. And this is the most important thing that everyone needs to understand – the third is not given.

The bank has such a thing as an anti-fraud system. And again a quote, but already from RBC:

Automated programs that evaluate banking or online transactions according to certain criteria are called anti-fraud.

Great, banks protect your money by trying to weed out strange transactions that are not typical of you. And all transactions pass such a check.

If the operation is suspicious, it is simply rejected. If not, it passes.

No one can stop the operation midway and then call you to clarify whether it should be done or not.

Also with the issuance of a loan. Either all the documents and the application passed the check – you were issued a loan, or something suspicious – you were refused.

If something is missing, they will ask you to report it and run the check again with new information from you, and in the same way, either you are issued a loan, or you are refused.

If I wrote something wrong, IT specialists correct me in the comments.

How scammers work

Of course, fraudsters press on our weak point – the fear of losing money, especially if we have it. It’s hard to deal with that fear when they call you and tell you that you’re losing money right now.

Even I have involuntarily, automatically thoughts: “Suddenly someone is really stealing my money now.”

And they still apply for the Patronus Name, which was lit up when translated through SBP (quick payment system). And some can name the Surname, which is quite frightening.

But, if you remember the concept of “transaction” – it lets you down a little. Why?

But because the “bank transaction is completed”, it either went through or it didn’t. No one is holding her by the tail while she calls you.

If you’ve ever dealt with security fraudsters, you know their style.

Such fraudsters, like a carbon copy, begin to press on the fear of losing money and demand (exactly demand) immediate action from you.

Under the pretext that right now (while they are talking to you) they are not allowing the transaction to go through, as if they are holding the transaction, standing with their chests in front of the transaction, blocking it. They begin to press that your actions will depend on whether your money will fly away or not, you cannot delay for a second.

In general, they play on fear, cause (deliberate) panic, demand the most irrational actions from you, compare hypnosis.

Let’s remember that the transaction (operation) has already passed and no one will call, or if someone really tries to do something and it doesn’t work, it will automatically be permanently rejected.

The next type of swindlers (as now they are calling more often) are those who say that they are taking out a loan for you. It’s like in porn: everything starts differently, but the ending is the same.

Such swindlers press the same way as the previous ones on the fact that right now they are issuing a loan in your name and want to get a refusal of the issuance operation from you online.

They also try to cause panic and wait for irrational actions.

Let’s remember that if everything is fine with the documents, then the loan has already been issued (even if illegally and with a fake passport), no one will call you. If something is wrong with the documents or the application, it means that the loan will be rejected. And again, hardly anyone will call you.

There is also the option that the police, the investigative committee, the FSB are calling, and they are also trying to put something in your ears – here, in general, a scumbag is immediately asked.

If the Ministry of Internal Affairs or other authorities need something from you, they will come themselves or a letter will be sent to be signed.

Moreover, everyone has a different level of training, someone immediately says that he is from SB Bank, someone acts out a scene with several participants, you talk to one person, he switches you to another (while they switch, waiting music plays, just like VTB or Oschad bank). But the essence is always the same.

How real bank employees called me

I had three cases when I had to communicate with bank employees about real transactions.

First time.

I wanted to buy an e-book in one of the hardware stores. At the cash register, the operation was rejected three times, although there was money on the card. I didn’t have time to call the hotline when I got a call from SB Bank and asked if it was really me who tried to conduct a transaction for such an amount in such a store. I said it was me. I was told that the next attempt would be successful, and I bought an e-reader.

The second time.

I withdrew money from an ATM. A certain amount was rejected, although there is still money in the account. Here I managed to be the first to call and ask what the matter was. The operator tried me with questions: “Surely no one asked you to withdraw money? Are you doing it of your own free will? Did someone force you to do it?” As a result, after asking questions with passion, the operator said that everything is ok and I can continue to withdraw money.

The third time.

I made a translation for a friend so that he could order me a laptop in Canada (sanctions after all). The translation turned out to be unusual for me (I have not yet translated such sums according to the SBP), usually you transfer 1000-10000 rubles, but here it is more than 100000 rubles. at once. The refusal came twice. Then a bank employee called me and asked me this, asked me to name a couple more pieces of data, and asked if I was really transferring such and such an amount to such and such a person through the SBP. I replied that the attempt was successful.

What is the point of these boring stories without chases and shootings?

It’s simple: if I didn’t pick up the phone and didn’t respond to the operator, ignore him or send him three letters, then the operation would continue and deviate ad infinitum.

If you can’t buy something in an online store outside of the store or at home on the couch, then you can safely ignore or hang up the phone as soon as you hear about money being stolen from you, credit being processed and other ridiculous stories, and then everything will be fine .

How to protect yourself

How not to become the object of these unpleasant personalities sitting abroad or just sitting?

I made a couple of decisions for myself that calmed me down a lot.

  1. I now have 2 phone numbers: one main with this card, the second additional (virtual) – tied to the same SIM card. One of the big three operators has this service, but I think others have it too.

  2. I have several accounts in the same bank:

    1. there is an account for ZP (not even a card is attached to this account)

    2. shopping account (the card I use to pay in real stores and online stores is already linked to this)

    3. an account for one-time purchases on the Internet on sites that I simply do not trust very much or for subscriptions.

The first solution is required to link the main number to state services, FNP, banking, investments, etc. I leave the second number everywhere they ask for it: an appointment at a state or paid polyclinic, dentistry, courses, conferences, loyalty cards, etc… in general, everywhere they ask for your name + phone number.

What gives? It’s very simple: if they call you with any money questions on the second number – immediately a helmet for three letters. By the way, after this, the fraudsters start to get mad and get fired up, it looks funny like an “employee of the Security Service”, who was so serious, suddenly reveals himself.

The second solution allows you to keep money in relative safety. The main money lies in the account, which is not even linked to the card. On the second account (I called it “Operational”) I have a maximum of 15,000 rubles. I translate how it ends from the first account. Well, the third bill is 0 rubles there. When you need to buy something on a murky website or buy a subscription – I transfer as much as you need to the current purchase/subscription.

Result

I hope that I have helped you at least a little and I hope that you will talk to your parents, relatives about bank fraud so that they do not fall for the bait of these “radishes”.

Don’t be negative, those who think that the topic is not chosen very accurately.
