Deus Ex (part 1) / Hebrew

Short description

Deus Ex, created by Ion Storm and game designer Warren Spector, is an iconic cyberpunk franchise that immerses players in a dystopian future. Set in a world dominated by large corporations and oppressed by deadly viruses, the game follows a protagonist who unravels conspiracies and fights for change. The game’s soundtrack, composed by the same people as Unreal Tournament, adds to the immersive experience. A fan-made mod-remake called Revision has enhanced the game’s graphics, added new modes and modifiers, and provides a challenge to even the most seasoned players. Despite being released over 20 years ago, Deus Ex remains an unforgettable game that offers a deep and well-developed world.

Deus Ex (part 1) / Hebrew

Imagine, the beginning of zero on the calendar, you came home from school and, having rather thrown your backpack, without even having lunch, you run to the computer to finally play your favorite game. In what? Everyone will answer this question for themselves, but personally, one of those games for me was Deus Ex.

The world of harsh cyberpunk beckoned me, even though I didn’t even know what it was. When I got to the task for the first time and received my first weapon, I immediately went to kill all opponents that came into sight. But the first enemy immediately sent me to the other world, leaving me with a silent question “Why do the guns shoot so obliquely?” Well, I will leave this moment of the gameplay for later and start in order.

Nowadays, when everyone hears giant franchises like Call of Duty, Assassin Creed and Fortnite, very few people remember such iconic and genre-defining franchises as System Shock, Thief and Deus Ex, created by the brilliant game designer Warren Spector.

Yes, many modern gamers have heard, and maybe even played the last two games of the quadrology – Deus Ex Human Revolution and Mankind Divided, but familiarity with the first part bypassed them, and for good reason! It is the first part that makes it clear that cyberpunk is not just a set of neon signs and cyber implants, but the atmosphere of a dystopian future, oppressive, oppressive atmosphere, where you literally feel hopelessness with your skin. The game allows you to immerse yourself in the events taking place and empathize with the characters, because they do not look like cardboard blocks. The world does not seem artificial. Every overheard conversation of passers-by, every read newspaper, correspondence of people makes you believe in him, admiring the elaboration.

After writing part of this article, I realized that I would have to either create a very long post with a description of everything and everything, or reduce the text to a reasonable amount, while losing some of the information. Writing everything in one post is too inconvenient for the reader (it takes a lot of time, and in general, long texts are more difficult to understand), and I didn’t want to cut information, because I think that such a game deserves a more detailed description. Therefore, I chose the third way – to divide the text into two articles. So let’s start.

The creators of the game are the well-known company Ion Storm, founded by the legendary John Romero and Tom Hall, who also worked on Doom and Wolfenstein 3D. In 1997, at the invitation of John Romero, Warren Spector joined the company, who immediately began developing the game of his dreams, the idea of which he had been nurturing for many years – Deus Ex.

Unfortunately, the company did not exist for long, but the few games that they managed to release will remain in the hearts of millions of gamers around the world. These are the first two parts of the Deus Ex series, and the third of the Thief series – Deadly Shadows and a very good role-playing game Anachronox. I don’t even want to mention the colossal failure of the studio, which in many ways was the reason for the closure of the studio — Daikatana.

In a world where large corporations rule and the governments of countries are, in fact, silent puppets, the deadly virus “Grey Death” is raging, which has killed millions of people. Invented medicines that could help cope with the epidemic are in acute shortage and distributed mainly among the elites, who, in order to save themselves from a painful death, become even more dependent on the rescue of corporations.

People’s uprisings are starting in different parts of the world as a result of pathetic attempts to wrest the vaccine from the privileged sections of society. However, these riots are harshly suppressed by state governments. Organizations begin to emerge that try to change what is happening for the better, often through force. But the authorities quickly accuse them of all sins and declare them terrorists. To fight terrorists under the auspices of the United Nations, the Anti-Terrorist Coalition (UNATCO) is created, as a recruit of which the player has to start his journey.

I’m sure if you tell the average gamer in the year 2000 such a story, the first thing he will think: “Well, this is going to be a typical game about a cool commando who will kill terrorists!”, and he is deeply wrong! The main character (and you along with him) will unravel the tangle of conspiracies and intrigues, betrayals and misunderstandings step by step. Together with him, you will understand that the motives of terrorists are not so simple and obvious, you will see the bitter truth of the emergence of the “Grey Death” virus, you will uncover a conspiracy in the largest shadow organization, take part in events from different sides of the barricades, and you will not only be able to better understand what is happening around , but also, over time, rethink or look at all the events that happened to you from a completely different angle. Each new event, each conversation, each broken terminal will cause you suspicion, doubt and give you many reasons to think about what is happening around you, and the newspapers, which tell about the incidents in which you yourself participated, will impiously lie and write what they want. for the shadow puppeteers of the truth. As a result, after analyzing everything you know, you can make a decision that affects the fate of millions.

Believe me, you have definitely seen such a well-developed and deep world!

Before proceeding to the further description of the game, I want to recommend a fan global mod-remake called Revision. It is so good that the rights holders have allowed it to be placed on Steam as an independent, albeit free, product. It even has cheats! As many as 255 pieces! It’s scary to imagine what kind of fan you have to be to get them all…

To the question “What does this mod change”, I will answer: “Almost everything!” The first thing that immediately catches the eye is the tight graphics and support for modern screen resolutions. The models of the main character and other characters of the game have been replaced, now they have a much more modern look in terms of graphics. Added many posters, neon signs, interior items. The original levels were also slightly modified.

The game introduced new modes such as “Survival” or “Tasks”. The first asks you to try to survive endless waves of enemies, while the second gives you challenging tasks that will test your skills.

Added a new game difficulty and the ability to include modifiers (such as restrictions on picking items, reducing the size of items in the inventory to one cell or the ability to make canisters with random biomods), added a modified original soundtrack, New Game + and more.

I will say a very important thing right away: you can disable ALL changes and additions in this mod in the settings or choose something to your taste.

Equally important is the fact that despite the years that have passed since Revision’s release, new patches are released every few months.

The choice of modifiers is huge

Sound accompaniment

Music is one of the most important parts of any game, but in Deus Ex it helps the immersion a lot. Even I, a person who often turns off music in games, got into the mood set by the game when I heard its tracks. I think Deus Ex players will never forget or confuse these tunes, and many will even remember at what level of the game a particular track sounds. The main menu, UNATCO base and New York tunes are my personal favorites.

The soundtrack was written by the same people as Unreal and Unreal Tournament, and it shows. After listening to the music separately from the game, I was even more convinced of this. No, it is not identical, but the electronic motifs seem to cling to me by the same staples of the soul as Unreal Tournament. I can relate this to the fact that UT was one of the most favorite games of my childhood.

In 2020, to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the game, the original game’s soundtrack composers released an album consisting of 17 remixed or expanded tracks from the first Deus Ex. Some compositions remained faithful to the originals and received only technical improvements of modern music production. Other tracks are completely reimagined so that even loyal fans can listen to something new. This re-release is called Deus Ex Conspiravision. If you’re a fan and missed this event, I highly recommend it!

I plan to finish and post the continuation of this game story in the coming days. In the next part, we will talk about the gameplay, the role system and some other aspects of the game.

I’ve been playing games for over 25 years, and I remember them as just that: soulful and addictive, with engaging mechanics and interactivity, no in-game currency, and no attempt to be anything but a game. In my Telegram channels not only game reviews are waiting for you, but also current news and thoughts about gamedev. Subscribe, it will be interesting!
