Andriy Karpaty resigned from OpenAI again

On February 14, 2024, Andriy Karpaty, co-founder of the OpenAI company, ex-director of AI and former head of the Tesla autopilot development department reportedthat he resigned from OpenAI again

“Hi everyone, yes I quit OpenAI yesterday. First of all, nothing “happened” and it’s not the result of any specific event, problem or drama (but please keep coming up with conspiracy theories because they’re very interesting :)). Actually, working at OpenAI for the last year has been really great: I’ve had a really strong team, the people are great, the development plan is very interesting, and I think we all have a lot to look forward to. My immediate plan is to work on personal projects and see what happens. Those of you who have been following me for a while may have an idea of what it might look like;),” Karpaty said.

In July 2022, Karpaty resigned from Tesla, after five years of creating a dedicated team at the company for deep learning, AI development and machine vision for Autopilot.

Before joining Tesla, from 2015 to 2017, Karpaty worked at OpenAI, where he was a co-founder of the research laboratory. He is also the creator of a deep learning course at Stanford University.

In 2015, Karpaty defended his thesis on convolutional/recurrent neural networks and their application in computer vision, natural language processing and their intersection.

Previously, Karpaty completed three internships at Google, including training at Google Brain in 2011 (self-learning neural network from videos), then at Google Research in 2013 (learning with a teacher from YouTube videos) and at DeepMind in 2015 (deep learning with reinforcement) .

As part of his work, Karpaty is active in YouTube tutorials on building neural networks, with step-by-step instructions, and provides source code on Github for various projects related to machine learning and neural network development, including the nanoGPT project for training/tuning medium-sized GPTs.
