Americans will try to land on the surface of the moon again: for the first time in 50 years
The USA launched a missile for the first time in 50 years send a lander to the moon. This mission is planned to be carried out by the private company United Launch Alliance.
This was reported by The Guardian. After the successful launch of the Vulcan Centaur rocket, the Peregrine 1 lander with NASA scientific equipment is headed for the moon.
“This is the first launch of a new powerful rocket created by the Boeing-Lockheed United Launch Alliance and an attempt to make the first soft landing on the moon in the United States in 50 years,” the publication noted.
The rocket is known to have launched from Cape Canaveral in the US and is expected to land on the moon on February 23.
In the future, the Peregrine 1 rover is planned to collect data about the lunar surface in advance of planned future astronaut missions.
Peregrine 1 carries five functional NASA instruments and 15 others. These instruments will measure radiation levels, surface and subsurface water ice, the magnetic field, and a rarefied layer of gas called the exosphere. The data obtained from these instruments will help to minimize the risks and use the natural resources of the Moon when the space expeditioners return to its surface. Also on board are the first Latin American scientific devices headed to the surface of the Moon.
If the mission is successful, 5 small rovers, each weighing less than 60 grams and 12 centimeters in diameter, will be deployed on the surface of the satellite. In particular, Carnegie Mellon University also has a lunar rover on board.
The launcher contains a non-scientific payload, including a physical coin “loaded with one bitcoin” and a Japanese “lunar dream capsule” containing 185,872 messages from children around the world.
We will remind that before the New Year, NASA showed a cluster of stars, which in shape and colors resembles a Christmas tree. It is formed by young stars – one to five million years old. The star cluster has the official name NGC 2264, located in the Milky Way 2.5 thousand light years from Earth.
