A History of Computer Strategies Part 4: The Great and Terrible Warcraft, Dune 2’s Illegitimate Son
In the last part, we discussed the emergence of the world of Civilization and Dune II, which became real milestones in the development of computer strategies. This is especially true of Dune 2, from which less than all real-time strategies have grown. And it’s not just a beautiful phrase: the hit based on the Frank Herbert saga spawned the next two great games, rival brothers that defined the further development of the genre. Namely – Warcraft: Orcs & Humans from Blizzard and Command & Conquer: Tiberian Dawn from Westwood Studios. They grew from Dune II as much as Doom 2 grew from Wolfenstein 3D.
